Preparations
Indigenous to the rainforests of Honduras, calahuala or “calaguala” is a type of fern found in many parts of the tropical Americas, including the Caribbean. Local names for the fern in Brazil are guaririnha and samambaia. Traditionally taken as a tea (1 cup 3 times daily), across different cultures in the Amazon, the leaves and rhizomes are commonly believed to soothe the upper respiratory tract.
To prepare a tea from the powdered leaves and rhizomes, put 2 g in a tea ball or gauze bag and allow the powder to steep in 250 mL of freshly boiled hot water in a covered pot for 10–15 minutes. Pour the infusion through a fine strainer to remove any sediment and allow it to cool for a time before drinking. Refrigerate unused portions in a well-sealed container.
Caution: Not for internal use during pregnancy or lactation. If you are taking medications or have a medical condition, consult with a healthcare professional before use. Keep this product out of the reach of children.
